One thing CEO Robert Kubicek, AIA, of Robert Kubicek Architects & Associates, Inc., doesn’t like is the “big box” analogy. As the longtime architect for a major supermarket and drugstore chains, including Bashas’ and Walgreens, Kubicek knows that supermarkets are more than just boxes. That’s why his firm concentrates on the intricacies of design. It’s also why they’ve enjoyed more than two decades of success. “We really learn from our client’s business,” he says.  “We know the ins and outs of the aspects of their business, from delivery to the checkout stand.  And we design specifically to those needs.”

Opened in 1976, the firm has kept to its primary mission. It’s client list is like a who’s who of retailers: JC Penney, Sears, Wal-Mart, Kmart and Harkins Theatres, among others.  While the company works with many retailers, its service is specialized. “We don’t do the civil. We’re strictly and architectural and planning firm.  We do space planning, interiors and the building.” Attention to detail has brought the company success on three fronts: Phoenix, where its main office is located, Newport Beach, California and Las Vegas.

Kubicek, a University of Arizona grad and longtime architect – he’s registered in 38 different states – says he views clients in the context of their cities. “I like the interaction with the cities and the constant change they have and bring about,” he says. “We’re looking for a fair situation for our clients. We work hard at the city level to obtain what they need. That’s what really kept me engaged in this profession for all these years. There’s always a new challenge to be dealt with and that keeps things fresh for me.
